The Paradoxical Commandments is both a poem and a book by Kent Keith. He wrote the poem as an undergraduate, and it has spread around the world often in slightly altered form. Two decades after writing the original poem, Rozier wrote a book of the same title expanding on the themes of the poem.
According to Webster's Dictionary, a paradox is "a seemingly contradictory statement that may nonetheless be true."

And a commandment is "an authoritative direction or instruction to do something."

Therefore, with those definitions in mind, a Paradoxical Commandment is an authoritative direction or instruction to do something that seems contradictory, but may nonetheless be true.

The Paradoxical Commandments provide inspiration to those who are facing the trials of life and who may be struggling to hang onto their principles in the face of change. It is a set of maxims that help keep the reader focused on the goal and willing to endure what may be perceived as failure by some for the greater good of moving forward in a creative life lived with love, integrity, passion and compassion as the central motivational drivers.

Everything Happens For A Reason

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there ...  to serve some sort of purpose,  teach you a lesson or help figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be but when you lock eyes with them, you know that every moment that you are with them, they will affect your life in some  profound way.

And sometimes things happen to you at the time that may seem horrible, painful and unfair, but in reflection you realize that without overcoming those obstacles you would have never realized your potential, strength, will power or heart.

Everything happens for a reason!
Nothing happens by chance or by means of good luck.  Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul.

Without these small tests, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere.   Safe and comfortable but dull and utterly pointless.  The people you meet affect your life. The successes and downfalls that you experience can create who you are, and the bad experiences can be learned from....   

In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones.  If someone hurts you, betrays you or breaks your heart,  forgive them because they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart to. 

If someone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you, but because they are teaching you to love and open your heart and eyes to little things.   

MAKE EVERYDAY COUNT!
Appreciate every moment and take from it everything that you possibly can, for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people you have never talked to before, and actually listen.  Let yourself fall in love, even if it doesn't seem right because you are too young or too far, just follow your heart. 

Surround yourself with those who make you smile, laugh, and make you happy.
Break free and set your sights high. Hold your head up because you have every right to.  Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don't believe in yourself, no one else will believe in you.

My State Rep takes up life issues

I knew there was a reason why I liked this guy....

With heated debate reflecting a deep social divide over issues of life and death, a Minnesota House committee on Tuesday passed a bill that would require health-care professionals to provide food and water to people incapable of making care decisions for themselves.

Rep. Tim Wilkin, R-Eagan, said he became interested in the legislation after watching the controversy that erupted last year over the Florida case of Terri Schiavo, who died after her feeding tube was removed. Her case sparked nationwide protests, and involved Congress, federal courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. . Wilkin said he wanted to avoid that kind of "circus."

Is autism caused by mercury in vaccines?

We have some friends that have been saying that they think that their childrens vaccines have cause symptoms of autism in two of their children.  Now we see this study.

A new study shows a direct relationship between mercury in children's vaccines and autism, contradicting government claims there is no proven relationship between the two.

Be careful with the vaccines that you get for your children.  They are not risk free.

When will I stop hurting?

"I lost a loved one nearly a year ago. When will I stop hurting?"

The question was simple but difficult to answer. She was challenging me. I wanted to help her, but I knew that only she could answer that question.

Whenever someone writes to tell me about a death, I always talk about the difficult months ahead. I refer to it as a "Year of Firsts." The first holiday, birthday, anniversary, summer picnic or other personal event without that loved one.

Then there are those little things you never really paid attention to before, but now find a gaping hole right in the middle of your day. Like the time they woke up each morning, how they had their coffee, the sound the door made around dinner time when they arrived home and the way they said "hello." But there was something about this message today that made me stop and really think about what I needed to say. Oddly, I decided that the pain she was feeling was a good thing, but I wasn't sure she wanted to know that. Here is exactly what I wrote to her:

When will you stop hurting? That is a measure of the love you shared and how does one measure love? By remembering them long after they are gone. "Memories" are the shadows of a life well lived that remain long after the light of their being has gone out. May you never forget. "Pain" is the echo of remembering those special moments when all the world belonged to the both of you. The day will come when the pain of remembering turns into understanding the privilege of ever having them in your life at all. Remembering will be a joy. Although the pain is great at times you are reminded still, how very much you loved and were loved.

May the rest of your life be a reflection of that love and when your time comes
may your passing cast long shadows for all who loved you, too.

Theologian-scientist makes stem-cell issues understandable

Father Tadeusz Pacholczyk, a scientist and theologian who will speak at St. Joseph in Hopkins Feb. 2, is an engaging and riveting speaker who communicates complex scientific and moral issues in a way that makes them easily understandable to those of us without advanced degrees.

He is director of education for the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia and directs the students currently enrolled in the National Catholic Certification Program in Health Care Ethics. He also writes a monthly column, “Making Sense Out of Bioethics.”

Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven't thought about it, don't have it on their schedule, didn't know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine.

I got to thinking one day about all those women on the Titanic who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back. From then on, I've tried to be a little more flexible.

How many women out there will eat at home because their husband didn't suggest going out to dinner until after something had been thawed? Does the word "refrigeration" mean nothing to you?
